The world’s media has chronicled every bit of the Nano’s birth, from labour pangs panning over three years to a safe delivery. So, will marketing the car be child’s play after all. There is so much momentum propelling it or will it be a case of striving to meet great expectations.

Tata Motors’ ultra low-cost car, or the one-lakh car as it had come to be known, had sparked interest in all of us simply because of the seemingly insurmountable challenge of making a modern automobile at that price.

The people that fed the rumour mills about how it would be an auto-rickshaw with four wheels, the critics that warned about the environmental impact that such a $3,000 car would bring upon us and the politicians who were opposed to the very concept, never really expected the end product to turn out the way it did.

In the end, the Nano, after it was unveiled, has set a billion hearts aflutter, not merely because of its unbelievably affordable price but because of the promise it holds for providing safe personal mobility to a huge section of the Indian two-wheeler riding population.

I think I was much more nervous during the launch of Indica because we had never been in car manufacturing before. We were venturing into a new segment. We are again venturing into a new segment but in a product line in which we have 10 years of experience now.

New Delhi: The secret is out. As Ratan Tata drove in in what is perhaps the most-hyped four-wheeler of the year, excitement was palpable at the Auto Expo show in New Delhi. Christened Nano, and famously priced at Rs 1 lakh (about $2700), the car was unveiled on Wednesdayto a thunderous applause.However, not all seemed as excited over the launch. “If everyone buys the small car, where will they keep it. Where will they drive it?” Maharashtra Home Minister R R Patil quipped.Allaying fears of environmentalists, Tata said the 624 cc, 33 HP petrol engine meets Bharat Stage-III emission norms and can also meet the Euro 4 norms.Nano will also have a 30-litre fuel tank and four-speed manual gearshift. The car will come with air conditioning, but will have no power steering.The car comes with front disk and rear drum brakes. The company claims mileage of 20 kmpl in city and 26 kmpl on highway.
