Nandigram Compensation

Nandigram, November 30 Family members of the 14 people killed in police firing during anti-land acquisition protest on March 14 at Nandigram received their compensation on Sunday, nine months after the incident.

The relatives of 13 victims, except for those of Joydeb Das, received Rs 5 lakh as compensation.

The amount was earlier fixed by the Kolkata High Court early this month. Nobody was found at the Das residence to receive the money, BDO Nandigram-I Shantiram Garai said.

Garai said a new front would be formed to chalk out a common minimum agenda and a steering and coordination committee.

But state Congress working president Pradip Bhattacharya said there was no party-to-party discussion with the Trinamool Congress on the formation of the new Front, nor was “our party informed of Sunday’s meeting”. Bhattacharya, however, said he would talk to the Trinamool as well as Congress high command regarding the new Front.
