Jammu and Kashmir Divided

In this post I’d like to express my concern over the fact that India may loose its oneness and may be divided because of the vested interests of politicians involved in this violent uprising against the wrong issues (communal) . This uprising may have been ignited by the Amarnath shrine land, but the main cause of it has been different. The differences are between the people of Jammu and those of Kashmir. These differences have grown into a full fledged poisonous tree that is now threatening to destroy its own roots. The people of Jammu resentfully feel that Kashmir has been pampered for the last 60 years, no denial of that fact. The fact that educated people, not persuaded by political parties have joined the agitation itself proves this. On the contrary, the highway blockade by VHP activists has sharpened the perception that Kashmiris (Muslims) are persecuted in India (dominated by Hindus). This agitation had nothing to do with hindus or muslims, but this case has become critical since the density of Hindus is more in Jammu and the same is with Muslims in Kashmir.
I recently was a spectator to a debate between a resident of Jammu and a kashmiri. The debate was centered around the agitation in Jammu and had begun from the violence by the army. The Jammu resident was unhappy with the over pampering of Kashmir. She said that Kashmir has been the center of growth and development.

More funds are allocated to Kashmir than to Jammu and hence the growth has been slow. There are few colleges in jammu and most colleges in kashmir have more quota for Kashmiri people. Most politicians in kashmir have built sprawling bunglows in jammu on illegal forest land and they come there to stay, when its snowing in the valley. So when it came to amarnath land there was no need for the land to be taken. The Kashmiri resident argued that there were more number of people in Kashmir and almost equal funds had been allocated to jammu, mentioning that there were almost 7 flyovers in jammu as compared to 1 in Kashmir. When this debate was going on I was just thinking that why has this become communal and why hurriyat and BJP are in the midst fuelling agitation and protests in J&K. This is the only thing stopping a civil war. The agitation and protests have been concentrated on economic effects.

The media has also been biased and has only focussed on issues pertaining to a single side. Media plays a vital role in influencing the thoughts of people and if it is biased or corrupted then it adds fuel to the fire. It could although give them good sales but it is simply ruining J&K, already heading towards anarchy. One such website I’d like to mention is http://www.greaterkashmir.com . The website has shown has portrayed kashmiris as victims and all others as cruel. The fact is that we all are victims here. Things such as Muzaffarabad Chalo could only give the anti social terror elements a chance to sneak in militants into India and they could kill innocents.
The situation could be like what it was in 1947 if muslims were made to flee from jammu, giving the BJP an electoral advantage.
The possibility of a bloody civil war is quite there as J&K has a lot of village self defense committees armed with automatic rifles. These committees are largely Hindu. In the hilly terrain, a civil war could would mean catastrophy.

The only solution to this situation is that one side needs to compromise. The political parties have their own vested interests. BJP might have gained good political ground from this agitation. We need to sort out our differences and stay with peace. Somebody will have to compromise. We have seen so many communal riots and seen thousands of people die as a result of that. But we are still fighting, not realizing that this situation could get communal soon. There are lakhs of people at the Amarnath yatra. As a resident of J&K you might criticize me. You might say that how can I, who may have never stayed in J&K could say this so easily. You are right, but the solution of this problem is only in compromising. About 21 people have died so far because of the firing by the army and CRPF. You may hate the army, but please don’t support the terrorists either. Supporting them has allowed them to survive. Naxalites have also survived in a similar way. The right path is long and bumpy and does not look easy, but it always leads you to the right place.

  1. jammuwala says:

    dear all

This post is good but again the entire country and the media thinks that this agitation is being run by BJP. Sirs to make it very clear the people of jammu are not against muslims and kashmiris but what they want to end is Kashmiri imperialism, which has been hoisted upon them since 1947.
Jammu people are proud and secular, India made a mistake in taking them for granted and same was done by Kashmiris.
But this wont continue as all people of the region have decided that the fight will go to the finish. To the last man shall we fight for our cause and region. But we wont kill muslims and kashmiris, our is a secular fight against Kashmiri imperialism.

Economic blockade is a fraud being orchestrated by the media and Indian leadership, if a real blockade is enforced then India will have no option but to airlift every thing as all roads of jammu will be filled with the blood of freedom fighters.
Also it is better that road to Pakistan is opened once for all and if kashmiris want to go let them go.

  2. Sanjay Puri says:

Jammu’s protest is not about religion but about defending India’s principal of Secularism and equality.

The people in Jammu have protested against the elected leadership bowing tamely before fundamental elements refusing to accept Govt and Court order giving limited rights to Amarnath Shrine board to construct temporary facilities for pilgrims. The Govt’s flip-flop and subsequent revocation of the order is a meek surrender before the fundamental elements seeking Nizam E Mustafa threatening the basis of our country’s secular existence

The boycott of Govt Functions which in any case are always lifeless and formal with Govt officers showing their faces to mark attendance were replaced by Jammuites celebrating the 62 independence day as community function with enthusiasm and energy and fervor not seen anywhere else in the country. Jammu has had a secular politics with mainstream Congress and NC getting most of the seats and not BJP as is being projected now.

New Delhi and India needs to wake-up Please!! When shall we defend the Principals of our existence. Independence and nationhood is not about imposing fake leadership in J&K bowing before fundamentalism and religious intolerance and then making another sermon from the heights of the Red fort that define the difference between the people and those governing them.

  3. Kashmiri says:

    hai! Namaskar! Satsriakal!
U KNW THE PROTESTS IN KASHMIR ARE NOT AGANIST HINDUISM, AMARNATH YATRA, LAND OR WHT U KNW
Infact here the people of Kashmir love to serve Amarnath pilgrims. V love them, care them, respect them but some anti social fundamentalists have communalised the whole issue as u see in Jammu where houses of muslims are burnt, there property is destroyed, Kashmiri drivers are burnt alive and wht not. And if all this is not enough they stop supplies of essential items like food, medicines etc. and turn Kashmir in a big prison wher people are made to die for nothing.
Just give me one example where any non-muslim is hurt by Kashmiri in the ongoing protests, in fact they are served with food, shelter and above all love and care.
Here in Kashmir we are fighting for freedom and nothing else
V R not terrorists but are fighting for the achievement of our birth right- Right to self determination.
V r demanding withdrawal of troops from here who have killed lakhs of people here. U know even just two days before peaceful and unarmed protesters were shot dead by military personals for the reason that they were demanding freedom and too in a very peaceful manner.
Now tell me Who is terrorist- U, ME or INDIAN MILITARY

  4. Pradeep says:

More than anyone else, we all and the leadership, in India, Pakistan and Kashmir, must realise that situations have changed. No point in talking about history. Each one will have naturally different aims. But we must recognise that peace is the biggest aim, which all of us are missing. India has consistently left out separatists in Kashmir from talks. That has to change. That’ll be a good way to start. Serious efforts by parties should begin to reach a settlement of the issue.

  5. An Indian says:

The so called Kashmiris, who are not but claim that they are … are actually muslim migrants. The originals Kashmiri’s are Kashmiri Panditis who were shoved away by these terror loving islamic fascist. Now they say that they want independence but from whom…? The fact is that original Kashmiris (Kashmiri Panditis) should actually asked for freedom from this terror which they are facing over the years. Muslims and terrorist from Kashmir can own land anywhere in India but when it comes to an Indian or a Hindu to have a land there then he can’t according to that article 370. What on earth is going on in India ??…there is only one Hindu country and even in that country they have to fight for their rights… this is shameful that our central government is having a blind eye. This fight and agitation must go on and every Indian must join hands and support this agitation unless we free our land from those fascist islams from Pakistan.

    JAI HIND !!

wel, it hurts wen those who dont know abt all the facts become judgemental in their own small ways. coming to the point the 100 acre land , the reason behind the ongoing agitations is jst the tip of the iceberg. it is the long delayed response of the jammuities against the discrimination of state & central govt.who by nature are very tolerant unlike their kashmiri counterparts, its the volcany of agony that finally explodes after 6 decades.
but unfortunately authorities still fails to feel the pulse of the people.as far as the issue of the fforest land is concerned, then i question that why forest lanmd is alloted to an islamic university, why palatial ghomes of many ministers are constructed at the forest land of sidhra. do authorities hav aNY ANSWER…????
for those people who raise an eyebrow over the role of bjp in agitation i& are afraid dat BJP ,may gain political mileage out of it, let me tell dem dat its a mass movement agouged by amarnath sangarsh samiti , presently supported by more than 200 organizations in jmu & p[eople of all caste , creed& pol.parties are welcomed
ECONOMIC BLOCKADE, valley leaders create an issue out of nothing, army, authority & the delegation headed by foreign minister has cleared the stance, those very leaders like lone who r raising cries abt the scarcity of baby food in the valley, iwud likto ask dem where were they wen kashmiri pandits were lashes out of their homes in the middle of night, any ans…………..???
there r many things that remain concealed under the dirty vote bank politicsnow it has longer remain an issue of 40 hectares of land. it has become a movement of nationalists vs anti nationalists… my mind strived for the answer that why every time our central govt. kneel down in front of these secessionists who raise propakistani slogans, flounder pakistani flags….why our govt. is weak & paralyzed…? why our. govt. has not taken any firm stand against these separists who r puppets in the hands of the taliban on the very first day wen the announce “muzaffarabad chalo movement”…,.? were mrs.gandhi & mr. singh sleeping or they were too busy in finalising nuclear treaty or the r waiting to get the more webbed up………..?? i wonder, is the allotment of 100acres of land to board is such an intricate issue that govt. finds it hard to find the soln. even after more than 60 days…..K&K has been burning & the distance between the people of both sides is widening every day…i request to the people who at the helm of affairs to please allot land to board taking people of kashmir in confidence better sooner than later…………..

  7. patriotism speaks says:

Wel, it hurts wen those who dont know abt all the facts become judgemental in their own small ways. Coming to the point the 100 acre land , the reason behind the ongoing agitations is jst the tip of the iceberg. Rather agitation is the long delayed response of the jammuities against the discrimination of state & central govt who by nature are very tolerant unlike their kashmiri counterparts, its the volcany of agony that finally explodes after 6 decades.
But unfortunately authorities still fails to feel the pulse of the people. As far as the issue of the forest land is concerned, then i question that why forest land is alloted to an islamic university(& THAT TOO FREE OF COST, WHILE BOARD IS PAYING 2.5 CRORES FOR SAID PIECE OF LAND), why palatial homes of many ministers are constructed at the forest land of sidhra. do authorities hav ANY ANSWER…????

For those people who raise an eyebrow over the role of BJP in agitation & are afraid dat BJP ,may gain political mileage out of it, let me tell dem dat its a mass movement agouged by Shri Amarnath Sangarsh Samiti , presently supported by more than 200 organizations in jmu & people of all walks of life have supported it irrespective of their religion , caste & creed, muslims of jammu are an integral part of samiti, & all mind it all those who want to join are welcome no matter frm which party they belong.

ECONOMIC BLOCKADE:- valley leaders create an issue out of nothing, army, authority & the delegation headed by foreign minister has cleared the stance that no blockade or any other simulation exists in valley. that was all a propaganda… Those very leaders like Mr.Lone who ArE raising cries abt the scarcity of baby food in the valley, i wud lik to ask dem where were they wen kashmiri pandits were lashes out of their homes in the middle of night, any ans…………..???There r many things that remain concealed under the dirty vote bank politics.
As in the above mentioned post by the name of KASHMIRI according to whom no non-muslim has been hurt, let me wake her /him of the utopian dreams & remind abt the kishtwar where the shops of the minority (hindus ) were burnt & the minority was beaten brutually. another in cident occurs in poonch & moreover even piligrims were not spared who were attacked on the very initial days of agitation

Now, coming to the current issue, it has no longer remain an issue of 40 hectares of land. It has become a movement of sentiments of the people who are nationalist & secularist by heart. Its a movement of Nationalists(JAMMU) vs Anti nationalists ?( jo khaate to INDIA ka hain, PAR bhajan PAKISTAN ka gaate hain)…

My mind strived for the answer that why every time our central govt. kneel down in front of these secessionists who raise propakistani slogans, flounder pakistani flags….why our govt. is SO weak & paralyzed…? why our. govt. has not taken any firm stand against these separists who r puppets in the hands of the terrorists on the very first day wen theY announce “muzaffarabad chalo movement”…,.? Was the Indian Govt. sleeping or it was too busy in finalising nuclear treaty or still waiting to get the matter more webbed up………..??

lET me remind to u all dat kashmir is the gateway of terorism & this parasire is sucking the blood of the whole nation, so a serious step has to be taken right now .I wonder, is the allotment of 100acres of land to board is such an intricate issue that govt. finds it hard to find the soln. even after more than 60 days…..j&K has been burning & the distance between the people of both sides is widening every day…I’m afraid that if the issue is not addressed as an emergency thn it may take the communal colours.. so i request to all those who are at the helm of affairs to get out of their comfy zones & try to find a solution……

  8. The resistance movement by the people of Jammu and Kashmir against the illegal and unjust Indian occupation, is a struggle for the birth fight of self-determination as introduced by the modern age after long sacrifices of people on earth and recognised by the United Nations Organization in its Universal Charter for human rights. Similarly the international covenant on civil and political rights adopted by the UN General Assembly on Dec. 16, 1996 in the article 1 and in the declaration in principle of international law adopted through resolution No. 2625 by UN General Assembly on Oct. 24, 1970, recognises the right of self determination for all peoples and says that” by virtue of the principle of equal rights and self determination of people enshrined in the charter of the UNO all peoples have the right to determine without external interference, their political status and to pursue their economic, social and cultural development and every state have the duty to respect this right in accordance with the provisions of the charter”. The First and the formost thing is to understand the real problem in kashmir for past many years. Indian army Occupied Srinagar, many parts in the state had already fallen to the freedom fighters and AJ&K Govt. found on Oct. 1947. And yet India accepted the accession of the fugitive ruler. In the beginning, India claimed that she sent her troops to Kashmir on the request of Maharaja with the approval of Sheikh Abdullah, in order to help the state to drive out raiders from the soil of Kashmir, but India also claimed that she saw a ray of secularism in Kashmir and thus linked safety of Indian Muslims with the accession of Kashmir to India. Now India claims that Kashmir is important for her territorial integrity and national solidarity. In other words the fabric of country’s unity and sovereignty is so weak that if the people of Kashmir are given their right of self-determination, India will dismember, Muslims will be wiped out and secularism will be buried for good. All such talk is fallacious, and ridiculous pretext and runs contrary to the charter of UNO and the Indian constitution. Under both these documents, the Indian Govt. is responsible for life, honour and property of her citizens irrespective of their caste, creed and language. No people can be kept hostages or under bondage against moral, political and international legal dictums of the present day human societies and civilizations. India annexed Kashmir without any rightful cause and fabricated the so-called document of accession against the wishes of the People of J&K. In 1947 the people of Kashmir were more eager to join Pakistan and see fulfilment of their dream of a prosperous Islamic state on the foot steps of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). The people of Kashmir had access to Central Asian region in the bygone days. The occupation of Kashmir by India Severed ties between different parts of our unfortunate state. The occupied Kashmir lost-its ties with the central Asia,. which had already gone in the ferocious grip of communist Russia. On the contrary Jammu came socially and economically closer to the neighbouring state of India and ‘Hindu Chauvinism and fanaticism penetrated deep into the area under the cover of secularism and national integration. After the Jammu holocaust of 1947 the Muslims-found themselves at the mercy of Congress and National conference and at every time lived an insecure and horrible life under the sword of Indian occupation forces. The 1965 episode brought about more tragedies and horrors for Muslims needless to say that the Jammu Muslims had already lost their identity as a political force after 1947. Later in the era of 90’s allainces like the Tehreek-e-Hurriyet-e-Kashmir and APHC Another Kashmiri alliance of 34 political, religious and social organizations and groups was formed in 1993. Finally let us come to the core and urgent demand of the people, the solution of Kashmir problem. Kashmiris because of their long sacrifices, subjugation and oppression under Indian occupation forces need/deserve a just, honourable and urgent solution. They are the real sufferers and target of the present savage war/brutality inflicted on them by India. The problem before the people of Kashmir is that while they face unlimited and unparalleled animal brutality by India the United Nations Organization being responsible for protecting different nations and people of the world, is not initiating quick steps to implement its resolutions and stop India from further annihilation of Kashmir. The Present mass revolt by the people is turning back the state in the early 90’s but with the arms of Non-violence. Thus it should be cleary mentioned that We do not hate the late comers in the movement of freedom, people or politicians who joined our ranks when they lost all hopes to gain power, and elections became irrelevant in Kashmir. But, we should not make fun of the history of freedom by seating such people at the top of those sons whose commitment and faith in the ideology of freedom remained unshakeable in the dark decades of our history. The late comers should not trespass on the rights of earliest and committed sons of our movement for freedom and right of self- determination. “Hum kya chahate Azadi” This was the first slogan which erupted on the streets of Kashmir in the 90’s when the people of Kashmir announced to begin an era of sacrifices and the era to revolt against the armed forces. It was in that era when Pakistani president general Zia-Ul-Haq died in an air crash on August 17, 1988. That was the time when the streets of Kashmir were witnessed by anti-Indian slogans. The long seven years of protest and non-violence which lead to innocent killings of youths in Kashmir was a hard thing for the people to forget, and the era of 90’s was the declaration of armed rebel against the indian deployed forces. The people of Kashmir became the violent target of Indian army, assaulting, manhandling the innocent people. The Bomb Explosion which hit The CTO, spread all over the valley and forced the international organisation to divert there attention towards the ill treatment of the people by the Indian deployed Army. The Maisuma Massacre which left hundreds of people dead and thousands of injured was a open declaration of a war against the humanity and against the people of Kashmir. Since the year 1931 the people of Kashmir have been the target of armed forces from Dogra Soldiers to the Indian deployed Army.
After 20 years of struggle the clock is turning back to the 90’s. So unfortunate that the government still answer slogans with bullets. Human rights violation is on the cards in Kashmir. The prime minister of India delivered the declaration of Zero-tolerance but so unfortunate that the government failed to tolerate the slogans and proved that Guns speak more loud than slogans. Calling for peace in the state seems to be a late reaction, as the people have now turned back to the unfinished struggle left by the martyrs. The attitude of the army and other law enforcing agencieshad taken all preventive measures to ensure not to use force in jammu, which was all together opposite in kashmir. Those people who speak of discrimination in jammu, should understand that discrimination on the part of kashmir and on the basis of a muslim region has always been the policy of India, where muslims are treated as anti-nationals. The recent arm training in Jammu by the VHP was picturised as a arm training festival, but if such a training session will be taken by a muslim, he will be targetted as a anti-nationalist. Those who say that people of Kashmir are a threat to the Secularism of India, should know that the communal Riots in Orissa and anti-secularism statements by leaders like Raj Thackhery are the one’s who will whitewash the Indian Secularism. The nation wide chakka Jam by the BJP and VHP shows the anti-muslim mind, and all these things are in no way helping to resolve the violence in Jammu and Kashmir but are the means of adding fuel to fire. All these are the result of turing the people back to the old roads to survive their livings. The slogans for “Azadi” are now getting bullets by the Indian Army and this is turning to the same old 90’s when chests had outnumbered the bullets, but after all this thing it is sad that still their are some who are counting votes with the blood Of the Innocents Kashmiries.
